Plastic debris has attracted attention as an anthropogenic waste in the environment, while metal garbage, despite its prevalence in aquatic environments, has received less attention. Metal packaging, such as cans, uses polymeric coating films to act as a barrier between metals and products, posing a risk of microplastic pollution. In this study, 27 beer cans from 16 nations were examined for both the body and lid sections, as well as the inside and outer layers. Regardless of the country’s origin, epoxy resin was the most common polymeric coating used on the lid (inside and exterior) and body of all beer cans (inside). For the exterior layer of the can body, poly(1,2-butanediol isophthalate) was commonly employed. DEHP and BHT were found in nearly all of the samples, with the highest concentrations being 5300 ng/g and 520 ng/g, respectively.
Despite its reduced detection frequency, DOA was found in Belgian beer cans at levels as high as 9600 ng/g. There was no evident link between the country of origin of beer cans and the amount of additives utilised.
